DVJC - 2015-16 - Fall Term

Hello, Dundas Valley Junior Co-op families,

The 2015-16 academic year is approaching and it is time to register for DVJC. DVJC will run concurrently with the DVHS Co-op on Thursdays from 9:00-3:00. All classes will be held at CLA (Christian Light Assembly), 165 King St. W. in Dundas, except for Gym, which will be held at St. Paul's United Church (DVHS location). Courses will run Sept. 17, 24; Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22; Nov. 5, 12, 19, 26; Dec. 3, 10 for the fall semester.  (Dec 17 is a snow date.) Membership fees $40 per family per term Individual course fees are per student. All parents are required to take turns as Duty Parents (AM and/or PM). Please come prepared on the first day of class to sign up.

Art:  Sculpture and Diorama
Jodie Hart
Fee: $120

Students will learn the fundamentals of clay sculpture by creating several small figures in Sculpey clay. They will then select a scene from a movie or book and recreate that scene as a diorama. Dioramas will include painted scenery, sculpted scenery and clay figures. Paint shirts are recommended for this class. Students will need to spend some time outside of class researching ideas and gathering materials that are needed for their scene. As well, students will need to bring a small cardboard box to class by the third week (liquor box size or large shoe box).

Jodie Hart, an artist working from her home studio in St.George, specializes in highly
realistic oil paintings and is passionate about sharing her love for art with students. She
has many years of experience teaching in both traditional school and home school

Innovation in Science: Past, Present and Budding Scientists.

Fee $100 (includes book, logbook and display board)

In this Science class we will read and learn about "how great discoverers have leaped forward and revolutionized our world through the risky and wonderful window of chance" as we read portions of the book With a Little Luck. We will be looking at some current media where we will learn about how young people today are using their own innovations to make their world a better place. Students will also be working on a Science Fair Project throughout the 12 weeks to be presented and judged at DVJC and then potentially at BASEF - the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair held in March.Check it out at http://www.basef.ca/
Reading material, project display boards and log books will be supplied. Students will need to provide their own three ringed binder as well as whatever materials they need for their projects. Projects may be done individually or in pairs.

Sandra Zuidema, a DVHS parent, graduated from Redeemer University College with
degrees in Art and Education. She taught at Dundas Calvin Christian School for nine
years, has taught art classes in her home for the last thirteen, and enjoys weaving,
creating stained glass windows, and running a home pottery shop.

Melanie Rossdeutscher
Fee $100

In this course the students will work to develop skills required for performance acting. Such areas of focus will include: voice production and quality, characterization, communication and movement, stage direction, improvisation, monologues, auditions, and group script writing. Various exercises and games will be used to teach and develop confidence in the young actors. The students will be encouraged to create a safe and positive environment where each will feel free to further stretch themselves in performance. The 12-week course will culminate with a short sketch written and performed by the students.

Melanie has been acting, directing and teaching drama both in churches and the community for over 25 years. She worked commercially with agencies in Toronto and Montreal for ten years appearing in various print campaigns and commercials, presented as a guest host on the Shopping Channel for ten years, and was the Drama Director at Forward Church in Cambridge for many years. She is passionate about sharing her love of theatre and performance with youth and adults. This is Melanie’s sixth year working with DVJC.

Field Sports
Gord McNiece
Location: St Paul’s United Church
Fee: $95

We will look to have fun learning and playing low and high organizational sports such as Ultimate Frisbie, Modified Gaelic Football, Soccer, Scrub Baseball.  The skills taught will be  for the and sending, receiving and striking and balance and body control. Game strategies will include spacing, ready position and team communication.  For 20 to 30 minutes we will be focusing on individual skill development. Location will be Dundas driving park or in the gym at St Paul’s, during inclement weather)

Gord McNeice has been a phys. ed., history and English teacher for twenty-three years
and a Christian school principal for the last eleven. In total he has spent twenty-five

years coaching high school basketball, volleyball, track and field, and rugby.
